The indirect train
by Nathan Thompson
[ poetry - january 09 ]
The indirect train performs many miracles.
It can walk on water the way a man
holds up his hands and says "I didn't do it,
stop shaking me!" while loose change falls
from his pocket to be flattened on the ground
like tears. As a result it is possible to watch
trees come out near your feet in alphabetical order.
Before it pulls out the train is this slow
because insects are paid to steal the tyres it doesn't need
to rescue unbelievers, which it signals
by blowing a whistle at random inflating a life-jacket.
You must not do this yourself while still on board.
The train will tell you like a true friend when you need help.
